Job Summary of the Compliance Engineer:
The Compliance Engineer is responsible for ensuring that various products meet safety standards. They will provide support to Product Platforms and Product Launch Activities by submitting regulatory paperwork and educating personnel and customers about compliance requirements. Additionally, the Compliance Engineer will be responsible for maintaining product safety listings and working with Nationally Recognized Test Labs (NRTLs) to confirm regulatory compliance to environmental directives. They will also support product compliance actions required for export. This position is hands-on and requires collaboration with technicians, engineers, the product development team, and third-party certification parties to complete validation projects, conduct product testing, build prototypes, and maintain test equipment.
Qualifications of Compliance Engineer:
- Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Electrical Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2-5 years of related experience and/or training.
- Understanding and experience with regulatory codes such as UL, NEC, NFPA, FCC, and other Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTLs).
- Familiarity with environmental directives such as REACH and RoHS.
- Experience in writing test standard procedures and protocols, and generating reports.
- Proficiency in using 3D modeling software.
- Ability to read and interpret test requirements, electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings and schematics.
- Experience with mechanical and electrical system design.
- Compliance experience is required.
- Knowledge of electrical contact design, sliding contacts, and basic electrical concepts is desirable.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining a high level of productivity to complete projects on time.
Responsibilities of the Compliance Engineer:
- Prevent compliance issues by collaborating with engineering and design teams, reviewing design data and material selection, identifying product design issues, identifying short-term and long-range issues, and researching and identifying applicable regulatory and industry compliance standards and codes.
- Review Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for compliance with product NRTL files and environmental directives.
- Develop compliance plans by researching, analyzing, and selecting appropriate product safety and regulatory standards.
- Evaluate new compliance methodologies, qualify vendors, components, and parts.
- Assist in organizing compliance programs by preparing timetables, cost estimates, and required resources, including test laboratories and equipment.
- Determine compliance by reviewing compliance test standards, analyzing and evaluating findings, performing forensic analysis of failures, troubleshooting failures, and supervising subcontractors.
- Attain compliance by isolating and resolving non-compliance issues, recommending product and process changes, initiating engineering change orders, and supporting NRLT audits.
- Document compliance by completing approval applications, recording test results, preparing investigative reports, and filing Declarations of Conformity.
- Maintain compliance database, including certification markings and marketing materials to align with NRTL ratings.
- Prepare compliance reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing measurement data and trends.
- Update compliance knowledge by tracking and understanding emerging compliance engineering practices and standards, participating in educational opportunities and professional organizations, reading professional publications, and maintaining personal networks.
- Control access to the company's Regulatory Compliance partners, including UL gatekeeper and similar administrative roles.
- Understand and interpret regulatory codes such as UL, NEC, and NFPA.
