Automation Engineer

Salary: 100,000 - 145,000 / year + Excellent benefits (listed below)

Working under general direction, the Automation Engineer utilizes their skills and expertise to create solutions that involve developing and improving techniques, procedures, and products. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, and evaluating approaches to achieve project objectives efficiently and cost-effectively.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Performs specific and limited portions of broader assignments under the guidance of an experienced Engineer. Uses standard practices and techniques, adjusts and correlates data, identifies discrepancies, and follows detailed steps or processes.

o Designs and constructs electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery based on given requirements and specifications.

§ Creates control system equipment specifications and reviews vendor drawings.

§ Develops logic diagrams, cause and effect diagrams, control system architectures, and data sheets.

§ Generates functional descriptions and control philosophies to communicate functionality and company-developed programs.

§ Develops basic software under the supervision of a superior to support programmable logic controllers (PLC) and human machine interfaces (HMI).

§ Selects instrumentation and automation hardware.

§ Identifies ineffective procedures, designs, or specifications and recommends changes.

§ Prepares procurement specifications, material requisitions, and performs technical bid analysis.

o Utilizes knowledge of project change control processes to identify potential changes.

o Maintains liaison with design and drafting groups.

o Prepares, reviews, and approves drawings as required.

o Provides updates on assignment status to the Project Engineer, including schedule, budget, delays, and any problems encountered.

§ Assists in developing manpower, man-hour, and labor cost requirements for a project, and monitors them to evaluate budget limitations.

§ Estimates tasks and performs material take-off for a specific discipline.

§ Ensures the quality, quantity, and completeness of assigned engineering tasks.

o Plans and schedules engineering efforts associated with the assigned project.

§ Maintains timely and accurate oral and written technical reports regarding assigned engineering activities.

§ Keeps proper engineering files and records.

§ Develops an understanding of industry codes and standards.

§ Emphasizes collaboration, sharing, and seeking information and guidance as a team player.

o Conducts and participates in Factory Acceptance Testing of various electrical and control components, such as PLC and Network Enclosures, E-Houses, Motor Control Centers, and electrical and control components on mechanically packaged equipment.

§ Tests circuit continuity using test equipment to ensure compatibility and system safety after installation, replacement, or repair.

§ Troubleshoots, identifies, and isolates faults.

o Conducts and assists in start-up and commissioning.

§ Travels to the site for start-up and commissioning of the project.

§ Performs electrical, electrical controls, and instrumentation control duties, as well as some mechanical duties such as setup, adjustment, calibration, and troubleshooting.

§ Troubleshoots electrical controls, PLC programs, processor-based program/diagnostic panels, and relay logic controls in various manufacturing equipment.

§ Gathers and maintains specific records of technical data, such as tests and drawings, performs computations, plots data, and draws curves and charts as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

· Experience with HMI program/software such as Panel View, iFix, Ignition, Delta V, or other similar distributive control systems preferred

· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialty in Control Systems followed by a minimum of 8 years of progressively related experience in electrical controls engineering, related controls engineering, or industrial automation

· Experience in preparing and executing project scopes for Electrical Controls engineering

· Experience in the design, testing, commissioning, and modification of control systems in the electrical controls and/or industrial automation disciplines

· Ability to analyze data and present findings in written reports

· Familiarity with a variety of concepts, practices, and procedures in the field

· Working knowledge of related industry codes and standards

· Knowledge of mining and/or bulk material handling industries

· Installation and technical support of PLC-based hardware and software

· Experience in Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) on Controls and/or Power Distribution equipment, such as medium voltage switchgear and Variable Frequency Drives

· Experience in handling electrical power, control, and instrumentation circuits by generating all E&I project-related drawings, such as schematics, interconnection diagrams, IO Lists, Communications and Network Layouts, using computerized AutoCAD and Microsoft-based software

· Demonstrates technical expertise in their disciplinary field

Other Requirements:

Must be able to travel without restrictions, work the required hours, and travel to project sites for extended periods of time.
