The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive environmental, safety, and health programs for our facility. This role requires strong leadership and the ability to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as internal and external safety and environmental standards. The EHS Manager must have excellent relationship-building skills and the ability to drive change across all departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Establishing Safety Programs
- Develop and implement strategic safety programs for the plant
- Create safety performance objectives and measure safety performance using key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Communicate safety status and needs to plant employees and management
Compliance and Reporting
- Develop and maintain safety standards, directives, and procedures to meet compliance requirements
- Collaborate with the Corporate Safety Manager to implement safety policies and procedures
- Assist with accident investigations and recommend corrective measures
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of EHS regulations and laws
- Administer EHS management systems and facilitate compliance with standards and guidelines
- Conduct inspections and audits to ensure safety policies and procedures are enforced
Safety Training
- Create a proactive approach to accident prevention through employee training
- Manage training records and documentation
- Coordinate and conduct safety training sessions
Contractor and Vendor Compliance
- Review vendor's safety training and coordinate with temp agencies to ensure compliance
- Maintain first aid supplies and coordinate boot trucks
Program Oversight
- Lead the Plant Safety Committee and site Cultural project efforts
- Influence and drive a culture change across the organization
- Oversee emergency response program, security program, and fire protection assets
- Administer respiratory protection and hearing conservation programs
Other Duties as Assigned
Required Skills
- Detailed knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other industry environmental, health, and safety standards
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision making skills
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to develop and implement environmental and safety policies, programs, and training
- Understanding of manufacturing practices and processes (preferably in the food industry)
- Flexibility to adjust work hours and quickly change priorities
- Excellent teamwork and independent work abilities
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational / Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or other EHS related field (other four year degrees will be considered)
- Certification in an EHS related discipline and/or further education is a plus
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in EHS program management within a manufacturing environment
