Remote Forensic Mechanical Engineer

Location: Cincinnati, OH


Position: Remote Forensic Mechanical Engineer

(This is a remote position but the candidate must be located in the Central US to be able to travel to project sites)


The responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting observations and inspections of losses potentially caused by mechanical system failures

  • Gathering and analyzing data at the location of a loss

  • Consulting relevant codes, standards, and regulations

  • Documenting evidence and other findings from investigations

  • Taking photographs of damages and evidence related to fires, explosions, or other losses

  • Performing appropriate tests and data acquisition of exemplar and artifacts in the field and laboratory

  • Conducting examinations in a laboratory setting

  • Providing analyses of system failures

  • Researching and writing expert reports

  • Interviewing witnesses, property owners, and building occupants to gather information during an investigation

  • Providing testimonies in court cases involving investigated losses

  • Traveling as necessary


  • Understanding and application of the scientific method in loss investigations

  • Staying up-to-date with requisite knowledge in fire investigations as outlined in NFPA 1033

  • Ability to navigate fire and explosion scenes, crawl, climb, and use ladders

  • Obtaining and maintaining appropriate PPE certifications

  • Analytical skills to assess the site of a loss and develop a list of potential failures

  • Knowledge of mechanical systems


A Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is required. Professional Engineering Registration is also required. A minimum of 4-6 years of relevant investigative experience is preferred.
