Fuel Procurement Specialist

  • Managing and administering all fuel contracts for the plant
  • Evaluating and purchasing the desired quantity of biomass fuel
  • Developing and qualifying fuel supplies through both existing and new opportunities
  • Gathering market intelligence on new and existing fuel supplies, and staying informed about developments in the wood basin
  • Optimizing spot fuel purchases and contractual commitments to align with the plant's budget
  • Negotiating and drafting short and long term fuel supply agreements in line with company guidelines
  • Managing relationships with biomass fuel suppliers to ensure the best cost and quality combination of fuel that meets regulations
  • Maintaining communication with plant operations management regarding fuel inventories and operational needs
  • Collaborating with plant operations management to ensure procured fuel is compatible with operational and regulatory requirements
  • Tracking and monitoring fuel costs
  • Reviewing and approving invoices for fuel purchases
  • Preparing quarterly and annual fuel reports, including forecasting a fuel procurement budget
  • Creating reports to document fuel diversion and emissions offset requirements
  • Performing other related duties as assigned


This position is an individual contributor role and does not involve managing staff.


The Fuel Procurement Specialist reports to the Plant Manager and works closely with other members of the management team.


To be considered for this position, applicants should meet the following qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in forestry, business, economics or a related discipline; or a combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Prior procurement experience is required
  • Experience in wood fuel or biomass, fiber, timber procurement in the paper, lumber, or biomass industry is preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, with the ability to generate spreadsheets, reports, and business correspondence
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to gather and analyze information from multiple sources
  • Ability to work independently and autonomously with minimal direction
  • College degree in business or forestry is preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel approximately 60% of the time
