Clinical Veterinarian - Non-Human Primate Focus

This role entails providing essential veterinary care to non-human primates used for research and breeding at a CDC quarantine facility located in Corpus Christi, TX. As a Clinical Veterinarian, your primary responsibilities will involve specialized work related to the health, care, and management of non-human primates. This position requires clinical and surgical veterinary skills, the ability to maintain clinical records and databases, strong organizational skills, and a keen interest in working in a fast-paced environment.

Your main objective will be to ensure optimal veterinary health care for non-human primates (NHP) and support the breeding programs within the facility. You will also play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with federal regulations set by the USDA, DEA, NIH, and AAALAC.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative medicine procedures such as quarantine procedures, dental procedures, review of health records, and analysis of physiological blood data values of the colony animals. Review and modify clinical treatment plans accordingly.
  • Develop and implement plans for preventative medicine by reviewing and modifying existing preventative plans or protocols based on clinical outcomes.
  • Participate in animal health maintenance by conducting surveillance of colony animal health in collaboration with other veterinary clinical staff and colony staff, conducting infectious disease testing, performing routine physical exams, and analyzing bio-samples from colony animals. Conduct dental health examinations as required.
  • Provide care to sick or injured animals, including follow-up care and release from clinical treatment.
  • Maintain continuous surveillance for clinical signs of disease or injury.
  • Perform radiology, ultrasound, and surgical procedures.
  • Provide care for pregnant and neonatal NHPs.
  • Determine and direct the use of anesthetic and analgesic agents.
  • Conduct sedation and anesthesia with controlled drugs.
  • Provide guidance to surgical support staff on instrumentation, sanitation practices, and surgical suite maintenance.
  • Provide patient pre-operative anesthesia and monitoring as needed.
  • Provide and oversee post-operative intensive care, including the use of sedatives, analgesics, and antibiotics.
  • Stay current on all required training.
  • Maintain compliance with all USDA, PHS, AAALAC policies and procedures.
  • Provide direct monitoring of clinical cases.
  • Supervise veterinary clinical staff members as needed.

Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school, with a minimum of 1 year of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • USDA accreditation within 6 months of employment is required.
  • Ability to obtain DEA registration.
  • Strong veterinary clinical skills, with specific experience working with non-human primates (NHP).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of Programs.
  • Experience conducting research in a USDA or FDA regulated environment is preferred.
  • Current and relevant working knowledge of regulations governing the use of animals in teaching and research (e.g., USDA, PHS, AAALAC) is preferred.

Desired Experience:

  • Clinical proficiency with non-human primates and a high level of technical skills specific to primates.
  • Board Certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
  • Experience with hands-on technical training.
  • Supervisory experience.
