Principal Cost Estimator
Job Summary
The Principal Cost Estimator will oversee a team of estimators and ensure the accuracy and quality of estimates, as well as provide guidance and support to team members. This includes developing a bidding strategy and leading the entire bid process for both negotiated and hard bids. The Principal Cost Estimator will also be responsible for maintaining budget control during the estimating and preconstruction phases of the project.
Essential Functions
- Supervise and guide the estimators throughout the estimating process
- Create a standardized estimating assignment distribution plan
- Analyze and assess project plans and specifications
- Prepare comprehensive cost estimates for both self-perform and subcontracted items
- Generate accurate and timely estimates
- Conduct site visits to obtain a thorough understanding of site conditions and restrictions
- Ensure the accuracy of the team's take-offs
- Incorporate historical data into estimating figures, utilizing subcontract records and productivity analysis reports
- Coordinate with subcontractors regarding potential projects
- Prepare estimates using Hard Dollar and verify cost allocation
- Develop a preliminary project schedule based on plans and specifications, using Primavera P6
- Collaborate with the team to finalize estimates
- Provide cross-training to Estimators and Senior Estimators in different disciplines, preparing them for advancement and on-site work

Required Skills & Experience
- At least 5 years of experience as an estimator, with a focus on heavy/highway construction projects (including Structures, Bridges, Underground, Earthwork, and Concrete Paving) on projects valued at $50M or more
- Experience in leading an estimating team
- Preferably, a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a similar discipline
- Previous field operations experience is desirable
- Ability to collaborate effectively with owners, contractors, and other project team members to provide engineering and cost data for project feasibility
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with an attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft programs such as Excel and Word
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong preference for experience with Hard Dollar and Primavera P6
- Additional knowledge of Bluebeam, AutoCAD, MicroStation, HCSS (Heavy Bid), AGTEK, and Terra Model is a plus but not required
