Job Summary
The Machine Design Engineer will utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software, with a preference for SolidWorks, to develop and support manufacturing processes. This will involve creating layouts, detailed drawings, assembly diagrams, and technical sketches. The successful candidate will require a good understanding of mechanical concepts, familiarity with engineering principles, and strong mathematical abilities. The engineer will also ensure all designs adhere to manufacturability standards, tolerance requirements, and engineering best practices.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Mechanical Design of Automated Equipment (85%)
- Utilize SolidWorks CAD software to create and modify detailed production drawings, assembly layouts, and technical schematics.
- Conduct tolerance stack analyses to determine appropriate manufacturing tolerances.
- Design mechanical components and systems, ensuring proper alignment between materials, functionality, and manufacturability.
- Create and maintain an well-organized database for engineering drawings and related documentation.
- Interpret technical specifications, engineering calculations, and customer requirements to ensure design accuracy.
- Conduct design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including members from Quality Assurance, Sales, and Manufacturing.
- Participate in design and project review meetings with suppliers, customers, and internal teams.
- Troubleshoot fluid power circuits and ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, CE, CSA).
- Collaborate with the controls team to select safety components and ensure system safety compliance.
- Implement ISO 9001 standards and follow established engineering procedures.
- Manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Other Responsibilities (15%)
- Travel occasionally for purposes such as new system start-ups, training sessions, and field service support.
- Create operating manuals and generate field service reports.
- Participate in ongoing training and willingly perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD (or similar solid modeling software).
- Strong knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) and its appropriate use.
- Ability to understand, interpret, and troubleshoot technical drawings, blueprints, and fluid power circuits.
- Experience in designing for manufacturability while considering in-house manufacturing capabilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational skills and capacity to handle multiple projects concurrently.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and adaptability to learning new software programs.
- Understanding of safety standards (e.g., OSHA, CE, CSA) and proficiency in conducting risk assessments.
- Exhibits ethical conduct, self-motivation, and a positive attitude.
Qualifications
- A.S. or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Alternatively, 10+ years of hands-on machine design experience in an industrial setting.
