Senior Mechanical Engineer

Location: Tampa, FL

Position Overview

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will utilize their professional expertise in designing mechanical engineering concepts and solutions that align with the desired outcomes of each project. This individual should possess a strong understanding of the consulting engineering process and the relevant contractual documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the scope of assigned projects and utilize software programs to create mechanical engineering designs, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and other mechanical systems
  • Create cost-effective system layouts, determine quantities/sizes, and ensure compliance with applicable codes
  • Prepare and organize BIM drawings and coordinate with other disciplines throughout all project phases, including schematic design, design development, permitting, and construction documentation
  • Perform construction administration tasks, such as site observations, review of shop drawings, and preparation of punch lists
  • Define project scope accurately and ensure its reflection in contract documents; proactively manage potential variations in scope to ensure client satisfaction and project progress
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and professional relationships with clients, partners, architects, owners, and other design and construction professionals, as well as code officials
  • Provide support and guidance to less experienced mechanical designers
  • Perform additional assigned duties as necessary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering design for commercial buildings, preferably in aviation, higher education, healthcare, hospitality, entertainment, or government facilities
  • Experience in plumbing and fire protection engineering design is advantageous
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required
  • At least 2 years of experience in collaboration with multi-discipline engineering teams
  • Familiarity with different project delivery methods, such as design-build, design-bid-construct, and fast-track
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes, as well as other laws, regulations, and potential liabilities impacting engineering practices
  • Proficiency in Revit MEP is necessary, along with familiarity with other engineering software programs
  • Highly proficient in technical and computer skills, including Microsoft O365 applications, internet usage, and web-based tools
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey information verbally, in writing, and graphically
  • Aptitude for constructing original specifications for project systems and components, as well as completing project manuals with sub-consultant specifications
  • Strong technical knowledge and practical experience in evaluating electrical engineering options for equipment and component configurations
  • Experienced in cost containment and reduction strategies

Physical Requirements

  • Up to 10–35% travel required for site investigations, assessments, and client meetings
  • Extended periods of remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting
  • Occasional need for extended hours, evening, and weekend work to meet business deadlines

  • Dexterity in hands and fingers for operating a computer keyboard, mouse, and other components
  • Ability to differentiate between colors, shades, and brightness

  • Possible exposure to various work conditions, such as moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, high places or underground environments, fumes/airborne particles or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and moderate to very loud noises
