Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Freeport, IL

Job Description:

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the engineering, design, and cost estimation of various projects, as well as obtaining quotations. They will conduct research, develop, design, and test a wide range of machinery, including standard products and customized features based on individual customer requirements. The role requires the use of independent judgment and discretion in executing duties.

Essential Functions:

  1. Collaborate with a design team to prepare designs, sketches, layouts, and schematics.
  2. Estimate project costs, including material and labor costs, and secure necessary quotations.
  3. Report equipment problems and identify unsafe practices. Attend engineering, safety, and production meetings.
  4. Manage A.R. budgeting, record-keeping, and expenditure approvals. Evaluate inventory, approve invoices, and write requisitions.
  5. Schedule job installations and expedite equipment delivery.
  6. Evaluate and review new procedures and store requisitions.
  7. Inspect job installations, equipment operations, safety measures, and new equipment.
  8. Supervise contractors and hourly workers on projects. Provide technical assistance to the Maintenance Department. Train new equipment operators and maintenance personnel.
  9. Conduct engineering and design of equipment and systems. Develop procedures and equipment specifications.
  10. Assume additional duties and responsibilities as needed.

Required Education and Experience/Skills:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  3. Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  4. Proficiency in computer skills, including CAD/CAM operations.
  5. Excellent mechanical, analytical, and technical skills.
  6. Strong administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  7. Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team.
  8. Ability to lead a team and coordinate resources to achieve process improvement goals.
  9. Ability to analyze problems from an organizational perspective.
  10. Thorough working knowledge of plant engineering, industrial engineering, and tooling.
  11. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
