Position Summary:
The Nurse Director for Surgical Services is responsible for providing leadership in the surgical services department at [Hospital Name/Organization]. Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), this position is responsible for overseeing the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient patient care. The Director will lead a team of dedicated nurses and support staff, fostering a culture of excellence, professional growth, and collaboration. This role has 24/7 accountability for the assigned surgical areas, including managing resources, ensuring staff competency, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the surgical services nursing team, aligning departmental goals with the hospital's overall mission and strategic plan.
- Manage the daily operations of the surgical areas, ensuring efficient patient flow, optimal resource utilization, and compliance with policies and procedures.
- Develop, implement, and assess nursing practice standards, policies, and procedures based on current evidence-based practice and regulatory requirements.
- Mentor and guide nurse managers, charge nurses, and staff nurses, fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and ongoing learning.
- Ensure all clinical staff have the necessary competencies through effective orientation, training, performance evaluation, and professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other interdisciplinary team members to enhance patient care outcomes and improve the patient experience.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, analyze data, and develop and implement action plans to enhance patient safety and clinical effectiveness.
- Manage the departmental budget responsibly, ensuring appropriate allocation of resources and fiscal accountability.
- Promote the nursing profession by maintaining a visible and accessible presence in the surgical services areas.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between the surgical services department and other hospital departments.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of new programs and services within surgical services.
- Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills in serving as a professional role model.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited nursing school.
- Minimum of 2 years of progressive leadership experience in a hospital surgical services environment, such as Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, or full-time Charge Nurse with significant leadership responsibilities.
- Demonstrated strong leadership, communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Able to effectively manage budgets and resources.
- Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards relevant to surgical services.
Preferred:
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master's degree in a healthcare-related field.
- Certification in a relevant nursing specialty (e.g., CNOR).
- Experience with process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma).
