Process Safety Specialist

Location: Decatur, IL

A Process Safety Engineer is responsible for gaining an in-depth understanding of product development and the design of the manufacturing process. They must possess problem-solving skills and evaluate the operational process to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities:
  • Embedding a PSM culture in our EHSQS Management System at the facilities and developing local knowledge
  • Providing regulatory interpretation and technical support on process safety matters and site projects
  • Coordinating:
    • Efforts to comply with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) rules
    • Efforts related to Dust Hazards (Analysis, risk reduction, training)
    • Collection and maintenance of Process Safety Information (PSI) with plant personnel
    • Scheduling and employee participation in PHA revalidation with plant personnel
    • Identifying process safety training needs
    • Reviewing contractor PSM qualifications
    • Reviewing and following up on Mechanical Integrity inspection reports
    • Implementing a sustainable approach to PSM self-audits and inspections
    • Managing the site's record keeping process for tracking and closing PHA and audit action items
  • Introducing Process Safety Performance indicators into the facilities
  • Determining the appropriate process hazard analysis methodology based on scope of work and proposed Management of Change (MOC)
  • Overseeing the Process Safety Critical Asset Integrity/Mechanical Integrity program at the facility
  • Developing Major Accident Response Plans/Emergency Response Plans and Teams
  • Implementing a sustainable uniform format for developing and updating Operating Procedures
  • Establishing a culture of program ownership through employee participation by coaching and mentoring employees on their roles and responsibilities within process safety management
  • Providing oversight to MOC by maintaining and auditing MOC and Pre-Start Up Safety Review (PSSR) records and procedures
  • Championing the facility siting process to embed requirements into an effective management system
  • Participating in process safety incident investigations
  • Analyzing process safety incidents and trends and developing strategic goals for implementation
Requirements:
  • 2-5 years of relevant experience in Process Safety in a chemical/food manufacturing environment
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with site management and field operations personnel
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication, team-building, and influencing skills
  • Ability to research, analyze, interpret and implement EHSQS/PSM regulations, standards, and best practices
  • In-depth understanding of PSM, OSHA, NFPA, ASME, API standards and codes
  • Experience in EHSQS management systems and auditing
  • Experience in root cause investigation techniques
  • Qualified PHA facilitator
  • Knowledge of RAGAGEP (Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices)
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred (preferably in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering)
