Job Description

Job Summary:

The Commodity Manager should possess strong experience in manufacturing, engineering, or a similar field, in order to develop and manage suppliers across various commodity groups. Commodity category assignments will be based on the candidate's strengths and experience, and will include new product development. The Commodity Manager will collaborate with the demand planning manager, purchasing team, and other members of the team to drive quality and cost improvement efforts. This highly visible role requires the Commodity Manager to develop and maintain a portfolio of suppliers to drive value and have a significant impact on bottom-line profitability.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop sourcing strategies to optimize leverage in key commodity groups
  • Strategically dual source critical path commodities with domestic and global suppliers
  • Optimize the supply base to reduce the number of suppliers by at least half
  • Develop optimal global supply chains to support a "One Uniloy" strategy and future growth, with a focus on developing "Key Commodity" solutions that serve the entire enterprise
  • Establish clear guidelines for supplier selection responsibility in line with overall strategies and purchasing and engineering requirements
  • Establish long-term relationships with key suppliers through mutually beneficial supply agreements that facilitate commodity aggregation and predictable demand
  • Identify new or best fit incumbent suppliers in collaboration with the purchasing team, to facilitate the transition from transactional to serial purchase for domestic and global supply
  • Support AM sales in developing and maintaining key performance metrics for sales, quotations, fulfillment rates, and others as determined by management
  • Develop cost reduction activities through the supply base, targeting a minimum of 5% spend reduction year-on-year
  • Analyze market conditions and assist in developing annual budgets for assigned commodities
  • Negotiate secure supply contracts and best value pricing agreements with critical suppliers
  • Direct supplier interaction with R&D and Operations to develop new products, lower overall costs, ensure on-time deliveries, maximize volume leverage, and assure supply continuity
  • Assist Buyers with any tactical problems they have with their assigned duties
  • Assist in Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) activities with suppliers
  • Perform any other duties as assigned

Key Processes:

  • Commodity strategy development, execution, and implementation tracking (owner)
  • Procurement process (coordination with purchasing)
  • New product development process (participation as purchasing representative)
  • Continuous cost down process (participation as purchasing representative)

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to expedite the organization's strategic goals
  • Ability to work effectively with all internal customers as a team player
  • Solid background in MRP or ERP
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures and understanding of Purchasing Terms and Conditions
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • High level of analytical ability to derive valuable insights from large amounts of data
  • Proven track record of successfully resolving complex supply situations across multiple platforms or businesses
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional work environment
  • Excellent computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to travel domestically
  • Self-motivated with strong communication and interpersonal skills

Education and Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in supply chain activities in manufacturing environments, preferably within multi-location businesses
  • Bachelor's degree in a supply chain or related field, with a strong functional knowledge of metals manufacturing and/or engineering
  • CPIM, CSCP, or CPSM certification is a plus
