The Role of Principal Network Engineer in Houston, TX

The Senior Transmission Analyst will be responsible for conducting electrical load flow studies related to the Company's use of the electric transmission system. This position involves analyzing and researching the transmission grid topology, operations, and procedures for facilitating electric transmission transactions in different market areas. The Senior Transmission Analyst is also responsible for providing analysis on locational market pricing across all ISO/RTOs in which the Company operates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform transmission system studies and market simulations to identify transmission system capabilities and limitations, and assess risks and opportunities for the Company's generation assets and commercial positions.
  • Support hedging and trading activities through CRRs/FTRs/TCCs and other market transactions to optimize the Company's portfolio.
  • Provide transmission expertise and analytical support for the Company's commercial development and strategic origination activities.
  • Produce regular short-term to mid-term market reports and forecasts.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of the Company's proprietary LMP market modeling and analytics platform.
  • Participate in RTO/ISO and Regional Reliability Council meetings to support the Company's positions in transmission matters and gather competitive intelligence on changes in the transmission grid that may affect the wholesale market.
  • Support other analytical and managerial efforts as needed within and beyond Commercial Analytics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems, mathematics, applied statistics, computer science or data science, economics, or equivalent operational experience. Advanced degree in technical fields is highly desirable.
  • 3+ years of experience in transmission systems planning and/or operation with automated load flow tools and systems.
  • Experience with transmission modeling and analytical applications such as Excel, SQL, Visual Basic, Python, R, SAS, C++, Java/.NET, and other programming languages.
  • Working knowledge/familiarity with load flow and nodal price modeling software platforms and associated data structures.
  • Strong understanding of electrical grid physics, electricity market structures, dynamics, and rules; familiarity with FTR, CRR, and TCC structures and power plant operations.
  • Strong orientation towards designing efficient and reliable processes; ability to manage and improve complex processes.
  • Understanding of ISO market structure and energy commodities.
  • Familiarity with transmission grid topology, operations, and procedures for facilitating electric transmission transactions.
  • Experience and knowledge of sitting issues related to chronically congested areas of the electronic transmission grid.
  • Working knowledge of major transmission issues associated with local market structure such as congestion management.
