Senior Design Technician

Job Summary

Join our team as a Senior Design Technician in Hartford, CT. In this role, you will be responsible for planning and developing design and documentation from the schematic through construction phases. You will take the lead in producing design and documentation while providing guidance to junior staff.

Essential Functions

Senior Architect Equivalent (Over 10 Years’ Experience, Unlicensed)

  • Experience: Hold a professional degree in Architecture and possess at least 10 years of related experience.
  • Client Interaction: Proficient in presenting technical and design solutions to clients.
  • Project Execution: Collaborate closely with the Project Manager to execute project plans and oversee the design and technical delivery of the team.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Apply extensive knowledge of architectural principles and practices across diverse assignments.
  • Independently handle architectural methods and complexities.
  • Maintain frequent communication with the project team to ensure efficient information flow and stay updated on any client-related developments.
  • Lead meetings to ensure timely completion of deliverables and adherence to deadlines.
  • Attend meetings with clients and project teams as needed, demonstrating coordination skills with consultants and internal teams.
  • Take responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments on designated projects or project phases.
  • Supervise a small team of architects and technicians, if applicable.
  • Prepare meeting notes, digitally file materials, and encourage these practices within the project team.
  • Proficient in self-checking work and coordinating with the client project team and consultants.
  • Develop work plans and scheduling strategies with the client team, ensuring compliance with established project schedules.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to clients, both in person and virtually, with leadership skills.
  • Show effective time management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Project Involvement

  • Develop planning and creative design concepts for projects, and create presentation and design drawings and details.
  • Have experience in developing details and providing planning and design support for design documentation.
  • Generate building design drawings and compile information for project documentation.
  • Manage document preparation timing and schedules in coordination with staff levels, ensuring the completion of documents and adherence to project schedules and deadlines as directed by the Project Manager.
  • Lead the document team on selected projects.
  • Gather and assemble data to complete drawings, including field verification of measurements as necessary.
  • Coordinate structural, electrical, and mechanical drawings and specifications with architectural drawings and specifications. Meet with engineers as necessary and articulate the integration of architecture and engineering within the complete A/E team, including the specifications group.
  • Provide technical expertise through schematic, design development, and construction documentation to ensure accurate, detailed, and coordinated project documentation.
  • Research materials and incorporate accurate information into drawings and the project cut book, coordinating with the specifications group.
  • Offer insights to the team regarding material and design choices that may benefit the overall project in terms of design or cost.
  • Assist in specification preparation, including reviewing specifications at the completion of each project phase.
  • Assist in Quality Control reviews throughout the office.
  • Understand and apply local and state building and fire codes, and prepare Code Survey and Code Drawings for the project. Notify team members of potential conflicts between design and codes.
  • Navigate local zoning and approvals processes and assist the Project Manager in all necessary work for compliance.
  • Demonstrate experience in performing construction administration tasks, including reviewing shop drawings, handling RFIs, and making document modifications.


  • Participate in the preparation of proposal/interview materials to secure new business opportunities.
  • Support new business development opportunities by providing expert technical knowledge.
  • Take on special projects and duties as assigned or requested.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Hold a professional BArch or master’s degree in architecture.
  • Possess 10+ years of experience in architectural practice or a related position.
  • Have at least 8 years of experience creating design solutions.

Training Requirements (Licenses, Programs, or Certificates)

  • Possess advanced computer and information management skills.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD (current versions), and the MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, MS Project).
  • Capable of 3D rendering.
