Position Summary
Our company is seeking a Senior Interior Design Consultant to assist with the development of design and documentation for a variety of projects. In this role, you will have individual responsibility for creating design solutions and documentation, and may also oversee junior staff in select areas. This position is located in Hartford, CT.
Key Responsibilities
Senior Interior Design Consultant (8+ Years of Experience)
- Experience: Bachelor's degree in Interior Design and at least eight years of relevant experience. Certification as a licensed professional is preferred but not required.
- Role: Contribute to conceptual design and provide comprehensive support throughout the duration of projects. Collaborate with Project Managers, Architects, and consultants. Provide technical expertise and guidance. Collaborate with Directors and Department Heads on technical solutions and product strategies. Distinguish this position from the junior level by working on larger projects.
Effective Communication and Collaboration
- Demonstrate proficiency in all project phases, including conceptual design, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external team members.
- Maintain regular communication with clients to ensure proper information flow.
- Participate in virtual and in-person project meetings. Lead meetings that focus on coordination with consultants and internal team members.
- Excel in written communication through email and virtual platforms.
- Prepare meeting notes using standard client formats.
- Ensure accuracy of work and address questions or concerns with project team leadership. Review work of junior staff when necessary.
- Collaborate with the client team and sub-consultants to develop work and scheduling strategies. Adhere to established project schedules.
- Follow client conventions for digital file management and promote these practices within the project team.
- Coordinate work with internal project team and sub-consultants.
- Prepare and deliver presentations to clients, either in person or virtually. Lead selected portions of presentations.
- Cultivate a portfolio in one market sector.
- Possess strong time management skills to handle multiple projects of various sizes.
Design, Visualization, and Space Planning
- Demonstrate creativity in design and adaptability to different building types.
- Integrate interior design with architecture for a cohesive approach.
- Implement design direction considering construction methods and coordination with engineering disciplines.
- Show proficiency in space planning conventions, including clearances, human scale, ergonomics, functional organization, and three-dimensional planning.
- Assist in developing design solutions and present multiple schemes to internal and client teams.
- Understand the application of function, price points, lead times, and durability of products and systems used in projects.
- Be proficient in computer-aided visualization using various software applications, and share knowledge with team members.
- Research manufacturers and select appropriate colors, finishes, and materials based on function, client preference, aesthetics, and cost. Coordinate with team members and Senior Leadership, and incorporate accurate information into drawings. Delegate selections to junior staff on specific projects.
- Participate in client presentations and support business development through creation of presentation materials, such as digital or physical finish boards and visual slide-deck presentations.
- Stay updated on design trends in fashion, industry, and culture.
- Select and present multiple FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment) schemes to internal and client teams, displaying knowledge of function, price points, lead times, and durability of products used in projects.
Delineation, Detailing, and Documentation
- Produce building project documentation from concept to construction documents. Obtain and compile necessary data to complete drawings, including detail drawings for architectural millwork, furniture case goods, custom furniture, tile, and stonework. Delegate these tasks to junior staff on specific projects.
- Create Interior Finish lists, Finish location plans, and elevations, showcasing awareness and application of industry construction best practices.
- Produce construction documents under the guidance of the Project Architect, ensuring adherence to architectural graphic conventions of line weight, scale, and sheet organization.
- Follow client standards for Revit/AutoCAD, file management, and drawing organization.
- Conduct site observation, including photography and dimensional notes, in coordination with the Project Architect.
- Conduct accurate numeric tasks, such as square footage calculations, furniture counts, and material quantity take-offs for budgeting purposes. Delegate these tasks to junior staff on specific projects.
- Understand Building, ADA, and Life/Fire safety codes, their application in the industry, and their impact on space planning. Interpret applicable local, federal, and state accessibility, building, and fire codes.
Specifications, Resource Management, and Budgeting
- Oversee the maintenance of resource materials and databases in physical and digital libraries.
- Display knowledge of Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FF&E) and material costs, becoming a leading technical resource within the firm.
- Prepare and oversee the development of FF&E specifications, FF&E location plans, and budgets using client-approved software and formats.
- Prepare and analyze bid tabulations for FF&E bids.
- Oversee and coordinate Interior Finish lists and tagging of Finish location plans and elevations. Coordinate with client Specifications team.
- Make financial recommendations to clients.
- Coordinate with third-party FF&E procurement companies.
- Develop cost management strategies in collaboration with Senior Leadership at each project phase.
- Review the work of junior staff.
Construction Administration
- Participate in value engineering exercises, suggesting alternatives and incorporating accepted changes.
- Address RFIs and coordinate responses with the project team.
- Review shop drawings and submittals using client software, effectively organizing reviewed materials.
- Coordinate with construction managers, contractors, and procurement client teams.
- Attend regular construction phase meetings.
- Coordinate with the client's internal Construction Administration team and processes.
Other Responsibilities
- Undertake special projects and duties as assigned or requested.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in design or equivalent work experience.
- At least 8 years of experience in interior design, design management, and design services.
- At least 4 years of experience creating interior design solutions.
Training Requirements (Licenses, Programs, or Certificates)
- Preferred: NCIDQ Professional Registration. Planning for exams at this level is encouraged.
- Proficiency in advanced computer and information management skills, including AutoCAD and Revit.
