Director of Supply Chain Management
Position Summary:
The Director of Supply Chain Management is responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of procurement, acquisition, and distribution of raw materials and outside services. This role also involves designing systems to support operational capacities and inventory levels across multiple sites, in order to facilitate growth and implement competitive strategies. The Director of Supply Chain Management will lead improvement activities that enhance the velocity of the supply chain and increase the company's profitability. These activities may include contract negotiations, stocking strategies, supplier diversification, continuous improvement projects, and ensuring access to supplier capacities regardless of market cycles. Additionally, the Director of Supply Chain Management will develop and strengthen strategic relationships with suppliers, monitor market trends and costs, and provide expertise to senior management on contracts and procurement matters.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Architect and implement a supply chain model that optimizes production capabilities, protects the company's markets and customers, and creates value through access to raw materials and outside services capacities in all market cycles, while maintaining quality and competitive pricing.
• Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with suppliers, distributors, and customers to facilitate communication and collaboration for operational improvements.
• Define and issue contracts to improve operational efficiencies and ensure timely availability of products during high-demand cycles. Coordinate recovery and growth plans throughout the supply chain as needed.
• Negotiate supplier agreements/contracts, payment terms, and obtain the best pricing while monitoring the quality of purchased materials and services. Manage an annual spend of $100M - $300M.
• Lead improvements to business systems that enhance inventory investments and operational versatility. Collaborate with Sales, Inventory Control, Production Control, and Operations to ensure effective planning and costing parameters for raw materials and outside services.
• Monitor commodity market pricing and trends in metal producing and metal removal suppliers. Translate market knowledge into actionable plans.
• Manage the scrap material resale process and maintain relationships with scrap dealers.
• Identify and develop new supply sources, both domestically and internationally, ensuring technical capability, quality, and product standards are met.
• Conduct supplier reviews and implement recovery plans when necessary. Provide timely information to Sales, Production Control, and Operations on purchase order status and customer inquiries.
• Support the development of delivery schedules in coordination with Sales and Production Control for long-term manufacturing projects.
• Establish and maintain performance metrics to assess supplier effectiveness and overall supply chain performance.
• Monitor and optimize inventory strategies to balance cash flow, supplier relationships, and inventory availability.
• Provide technical support to internal resources regarding raw material suppliers' capabilities, supply chain quality levels, and industry trends.
• Educate and train fellow employees in procurement and supply chain methodologies and tools. Create standard work instructions for new employees or backups.
• Travel to vendor sites to assess capabilities and verify alignment with company specifications and Quality Management Systems.
Qualifications:
• BA/BS degree in Operations/Business/Supply Chain Management or a technical discipline
• 7-10 years of progressive experience in Purchasing & Sourcing within a manufacturing organization
• 2-4 years of recent experience in the Metals Industry
• Moderate knowledge of the steel making process, metallurgy, forging, heat-treating, machining, NDE, metrology processes.
• Experience in a multi-plant manufacturing environment with steel purchasing
• ISM (C.P.M., CPSM) and/or APICS (CPIM, CIRM, CSCP) certification preferred
• Strong understanding of fundamental business concepts in the metals industry, including resources, assets, balance sheets, cash flow, margin, return on investment, and their impact on the business
• Knowledge of ERP / MRP functions, with JD Edwards experience preferred
• Demonstrated continuous improvement skills and experience in team-based improvement activities that drive profitability and velocity improvements
• Project management skills to develop work agreements, project scopes, specifications, schedules, timelines, and deliverables
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders
• Proficient in MS Office
• Ability to work safely in a heavy manufacturing environment
