Chief Surveyor

Location: Fargo, ND

This job is for surveying on highway/roadway construction projects. It involves operating surveying instruments and equipment and entering data into computer software:

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead field survey crews in conducting plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects
  • Perform all survey and layout activities as directed
  • Review 3D modeling and grading tasks for quality assurance and quality control
  • Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with the project team
  • Assign and oversee the work of field survey crew members
  • Instruct and train survey crew in survey and mapping methods, equipment usage, and field safety procedures
  • Gather field survey data using traditional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods
  • Prepare field notes and drawings
  • Conduct field surveying for buildings, roadways, bridges, and flood control projects
  • Perform complex surveying calculations using engineering calculator and laptop computer
  • Create finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, corner records, and other survey reports
  • Research existing record information and maintain field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of survey experience, including experience as a party chief
  • Developing understanding of field instrumentation, GPS, and robotic total stations
  • Strong teamwork and cooperation skills
  • Experience in earthworks or civil construction
  • Technical school diploma/certificate in a related program is a plus
  • Valid Driver's License required
