Welding Engineer

Location: Spring Grove, IL

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Welding Engineer to join our team in Spring Grove, IL. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining a welding and/or wire direct energy deposition additive process. This role requires problem-solving skills and the ability to provide hands-on shop support. The Welding Engineer will also be responsible for program accreditation, monitoring technology advancements, and ensuring process qualifications.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

· Develop and manage the welding program, including compliance with AWS, ASME, and other relevant standards. Collaborate with the quality team to enhance certification requirements.

· Provide on-the-floor support to welders and other engineers during welding and additive processes.

· Collaborate with the non-destructive testing team to develop and maintain a weld inspection program.

· Create and execute manufacturing procedures for welding and additive manufacturing. Develop and submit work procedures for new and repaired products.

· Collaborate with the materials lab, review samples for process and welder qualification, and provide coaching for quality performance improvement.

· Interpret industry and customer specifications and communicate requirements to the team.

· Provide training on welding concepts and practices to office and shop employees.

· Utilize a scientific approach for troubleshooting and problem-solving.

· Handle welding quality rejections and implement corrective actions for system failures.

· Conduct research and development projects for process improvement and product development. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to expand customer base and explore new market segments.

· Serve as a technology subject matter expert in welding and additive manufacturing through industry research.

· Analyze and address rejections of forgings/welds, both internally and externally. Implement necessary corrective actions.

· Provide qualification and oversight for suppliers when necessary.

· Represent the company in industry organizations as requested.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

· Bachelor of Science Degree in Weld Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science (emphasis on weld processes) desired. Comparable industry experience will also be considered.

· Minimum 1-3 years of experience as a weld engineer or in applicable additive manufacturing research.

Required Skills:

· Experience in developing and maintaining a certified weld program.

· Intermediate understanding of physical metallurgy principles as they relate to welding, metalworking, and heat treatment applications.

· Excellent listening and communication skills.

· Technical skills include: Weld Engineering, Physical Metallurgy, Heat treatment Principles, Mechanical Testing, Microstructural Interpretation, Failure Analysis, NDE, Industry and Customer Specifications.

Additional Desired Skills:

· Familiarity with welding automation and robotics.

· Exposure to additive manufacturing techniques such as Direct Energy Deposition (Wire or Powder), Friction Stir Welding, and Electron Beam Welding.

· AWS Certified Weld Inspector certification is a plus.
