Ventilation Hood Project Engineer

Location: Charlotte, NC

This role aims to enhance our internal engineering capabilities for the commercial kitchen exhaust hood product line. The main focus will be on hood airflow performance, fan system specification, fire suppression integration, and navigating the UL 300A and EN 60335 certification processes.

While the primary responsibilities revolve around hood systems, this position also involves providing support for other priority initiatives. Your expertise in electrical engineering and certification will be utilized in driving our new outdoor electric patio heater project. This presents a unique opportunity for engineers seeking broader product exposure beyond traditional hood manufacturing roles.

Key Duties

Leadership in Ventilation Product Line

  • System Design & Optimization: Design and enhance commercial hood systems focusing on airflow performance, capture efficiency, and noise reduction.

  • Compliance & Certification: Lead certification workflows for UL 300A, EN 60335, UL 710, UL 507, ETL, and ensure compliance with NFPA-96 standards.

  • Fire Suppression Integration: Incorporate top fire suppression systems into hood designs for seamless protection.

  • Electrical & Fan Specification: Specify and integrate fan systems, motors, drives, VFDs, and related electrical components.

Support Across Projects & General Engineering

  • Electric Product Development: Utilize electrical and controls expertise to assist with the outdoor electric patio heater project and navigate UL 1278 and EN 60335 certifications.

  • CAD Modeling: Create and modify product drawings using SolidWorks.

  • Operations & Document Collaboration: Specify components, provide technical inputs for BOMs, part numbers, supplier selection, and technical content for manuals.

  • Manufacturing & Field Support: Serve as the engineering point of contact to address production issues and customer inquiries.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.

  • Experience: 3+ years in product engineering within the commercial ventilation, hood, fan, or foodservice equipment industry.

  • Career Track: Minimum total work experience of 4 years.

  • Compliance Mindset: Experience with UL or ETL certification processes, strong electrical safety knowledge.

  • Software: Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.

Desired Qualifications

  • Industry Standards: Familiarity with UL 300A, UL 710, NFPA-96, or EN 60335.

  • Competitor/Industry Exposure: Previous experience in commercial kitchen ventilation or broader foodservice industry.

  • Specialized Systems: Experience with fire suppression integration or fan system specifications.

  • Controls & Automation: Knowledge of BAS, commercial HVAC controls, PLC programming.

  • Cross-Application Skills: Background in noise engineering for fan systems or electric heating products.
